Other tobacco news that might be of interest...Last week, the Supreme Court of Canada upheld legislation introduced by the BC government that will allow them to sue domestic and international tobacco manufacturers for money spent on public health care for tobacco-related illness over the last 50 years. The BC governement plans to sue for 7-8 billion dollars. No doubt the other provinces will soon be following suit.

So, the government continues to rake in huge revenues from the heavy taxes on tobacco products and now they get to turn around and sue the tobacco companies for billions. Hmmm...

I guess it just goes to show that there is dirtiness everywhere.

I wonder how much money smokers cost the healthcare system in health problems?

Spoken like a true born-again nonsmoker.

And just how many packs did you smoke from high-school up to the point that you quit?

The way I see it, I've paid enough in taxes on the things to cover the cost of any health related problems I run into because of it. I'm pretty sure the big bad tobacco companies will have the same or a simillar outlook.

Look, I am not out to debate the morals/ethics of smoking. Each person makes their choice as they want. In fact, I didn't even mean to come across as a rabid non-smoker. It would mark me as a hypocrite, seeing as how I started again.

Do the tax revenues generated by cigarette sales offset the tax burden put on the healthcare system? That is the question I really needed to ask. I genuinely don't know the answer to that.

There are also some other social costs of tobacco smoking. Second hand smoke, Increased litter, forest/grass fires, etc. The may (or may not) be inconsequential. Again, I don't know.

How much does it cost to treat someone with lung cancer?

Quit while you're ahead and you might not find out the hard cost.

To date, I've tried patches, wellbutrin/buprion (nasty, nasty stuff), mockup cigaretted in herbal or inhaler form, cold turkey and gum. None have had an adverse effect on me. Perhaps those steep tax revenues should contribute to rehabillitation instead?
