Omidyar looks like an interesting reputation economy / social network / one-big-web-board.
The emphasis seems to be on social change.
The problem is that these little social reputation systems are so highly localized. Really, the only reputation system that is remotely global is your Google page rank. It would be nice to see a more global Right-Hand / Left-Hand Whuffie system a la
Down and Out in the Magic Kingdom. If I see a post from you on Orkut and I give you 3 ice cubes, why can't they transfer over to a different social network? A different piece of social software? (i.e. forum, blog-comments, MMORPG, whatever).
Maybe if you wanted to give someone a happy face, or an ice cube, you would do it by (GPG) signing a '+1 ice cube', and sending it to someones personal profile. This would work great for positive Whuffie. But how about negative Whuffie?
How would you counter the fact that social butterflies would get lots of Reputation, but without doing a thing to actually get it?
